Tarkir: Dragonstorm, an RCQ, a BCQ, Final Fantasy news, and more!
It's just another Magic Monday! Tarkir: Dragonstorm is fully here, and it looks like it’s a hit! Everyone had so much fun drafting this past Friday, and we’re excited to be running another draft at FNM this week! But we also have the return of Modern this week. The meta has shifted since the bans a few weeks ago, has TDM caused any further shifts? Sign up for Friday Night Magic this week to find out!
Or, if you’re feeling more competitive, we’ll be hosting a Modern Regional Championship Qualifier on Sunday the 20th starting at 10:30am. There will be cash prizes, cool promo cards, and a chance to advance to a Regional Championship later this year. The field is wide open, so be sure to sign up for the RCQ and our other Magic events at our events page.
But that’s not all for our competitive players! On May 3rd, as part of the DMV Legacy League, we’re thrilled to announce that we are hosting a Beltway Cup Qualifier! This is the first Legacy event at Labyrinth in quite some time, and it’s going to be a heck of a return.
Legacy is a beloved format that reaches back all the way to the origins of the game for its card pool. It features a diverse metagame that highlights some of the most powerful Magic cards ever printed. The DMV Legacy League is community driven labor of love to support the format in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Local stores host weekly events where top finishers qualify for the Beltway Cup, and periodically there are Beltway Cup Qualifiers that earn you a spot straight into the Beltway Cup invitational tournament in October. Registration is now open, and space is limited so sign up soon!
Although Tarkir: Dragonstorm has just arrived, it’s never too early to start planning for Magic’s next big release. Coming in June is Final Fantasy, and the excitement for the set is palpable. A love letter to one of the most popular video game franchises in history, this promises to be an epic release. We’ll be opening preorders for the set on Wednesday, April 16th at noon, set a reminder to get your orders in on that day.
This week’s featured single is Decree of Silence from Scourge. An eight-drop enchantment, this card counters every spell your opponents play… for a while. Whenever you counter a spell this way, you put a depletion counter on Decree of Silence. And if there are three or more depletion counters on the card, you sacrifice it. You can also pay an expensive six mana to cycle the card, and when you do that, you can counter a spell. The card sees niche play, at best, in Commander. So why feature the card? Because this is a foil copy of the card, which makes it an original foil printing. And Scourge foils feature the special shooting star watermark of that era. You can find this collectible piece of cardboard at our MTG Singles Storefront. And if you’d like to sell us cards, reach out to [email protected].
That’s all for this week! See you next Magic Monday!
