It’s just another Magic Monday!

 

Wizards of the Coast released a Banned and Restricted update and it’s a doozy. You can read all about it at their news page here. The biggest impact is certainly on Modern where many powerful cards were banned, but some surprising cards were unbanned. How will the Modern metagame shake out?

 

If you’d like to find out, come out to our Modern tournament on Friday! This will be your first chance to try out a new deck (or maybe an old favorite, like Splinter Twin). You can register for the event, or for our final Foundations draft of the year, which is also happening this Friday, at our events calendar!.

 

In fact, you can register for all our Magic events at our events calendar, including tomorrow night’s Casual Commander. Registration will open at noon, and due to how the schedule shakes out this year, it’ll be the last Casual Commander of 2024.

 

But that’s not our last event of 2024. In addition to a Chaos Draft and our farewell to Pauper on the 27th, we’ll be hosting a Magic Academy: Learn to Play event on Sunday the 29th. Registration isn’t required for the Learn to Play, but the event does start promptly at 1:00pm. If you’d like to earn a spiffy pin by helping to teach Magic that day, or at other events including AwesomeCon, reach out to us at [email protected].

 

But there are going to be plenty of events in January as well! On Saturday, the 4th, we’re holding a Pauper Commander Tournament with a twist! The Pauper Commander Council has decreed that for the month of January, uncommon Planeswalkers can be your commander! This event is a chance to try out this fun variation on the fun variation of Commander.

 

On the 5th, we’ll be running a Magic Academy: Deckbuilding. This event is for people who are familiar with Magic the Gathering, or completed the Learn to Play, and why want to learn about building a deck of their own. Players will receive 6 packs of Foundations and, guided by our experienced Magic community and staff, 40 card decks of their own and then battle it out for bragging rights.

 

And then, the next big event at the store is the Regional Championship Qualifier on January 18th. The format will be Standard, and players will be competing for promos, invitations to a Regional Championship, and cash prizes. Registration is already open, so sign up now!
