It’s just another Magic Monday! It’s almost 2025 — so much is coming in the New Year!

 

January is jam-packed with Magic events all month long; it should be an exciting time. We have two great events this weekend to ring in the New Year. On Saturday, January 4th, we're hosting a Pauper Commander event. Pauper Commander is a fun, affordable variation on Commander where your deck is all common cards except for your Commander, which can be an uncommon creature. The Pauper Commander committee has recently decreed that, in January, uncommon Planeswalkers can be your Commander. Join us this Saturday to try it out!

 

Sunday, January 5th, we’re hosting a Magic Academy: Deckbuilding event. If you, or someone you know, is newer to Magic and wants to learn the ins and outs of building a limited deck, come on down. It’s the perfect situation for getting ready to play a draft or a prerelease and is sure to be a fun time. Registration is required and currently live at our website, along with our other Magic events.

 

On Friday, we’re embarking on a new era of focusing on Modern at Labyrinth. No more alternating with another format! Every Friday, except for Prereleases, Release Day drafts, and the Fridays before an RCQ or Store Championship, we’ll be hosting Modern. It couldn’t come at a better time, since a series of bans & unbans have just shaken up the format.

 

If you’d prefer to draft in January, we’ve got a slate of fun formats to try out. Our schedule looks like this:

 

·         January 3rd - Modern Horizons 3 ($45)

·         January 10th - Bloomburrow ($22)

·         January 17th - Duskmourn ($22)

·         January 24th - Innistrad Remastered ($28)

·         January 31st - Innistrad Remastered ($28)

 

You’ll notice Innistrad Remastered on that list. The set releases on January 24th, but we’re hosting a special sealed preview event the Sunday before on the 19th. If it’s in keeping with the themes of the plane, it should be a spooky good time.

 

The biggest event of January is our Regional Championship Qualifier on January 18th. There are cash prizes for the top eight finishers, cool promos, and entrance into a Regional Championship later this year. The format is Standard, and we’ll be running a Standard Showdown the night before with its own set of sweet rewards for participants.

 

This week’s featured single is Volrath’s Stronghold, originally from the set Stronghold. The card exclusively sees play in Commander, where it can work together with a number of different graveyard strategies and Commanders. It’s a reliable enough recursion tool, yet is highly coveted because of its place on the reserved list. This makes the card very rare and collectible.
