Magic Monday-September 25, 2023-Labyrinth's Latest Magic: The Gathering News

A new world champion; our store championship; the release of Doctor Who; and more!

It’s just another Magic Monday!

Yesterday Magic crowned its newest World Champion in Jean-Emmanuel Depraz at Worlds in Las Vegas! Congratulations to him and all the Worlds competitors.

While not quite as high stakes, Labyrinth is hosting its own Championship on October 7th. The format is Wilds of Eldraine sealed and it should be a lot of fun. Participants will receive Lotus Petal promos celebrating Magic’s 30th Anniversary, and there will be a bunch of other great promos up for grabs. You can register for it and our other Magic events at https://www.labyrinthdc.com/magic-events/. This Friday, for instance, is Wilds of Eldraine Draft and Modern Constructed.

We also have some exciting Commander events coming up. Every Tuesday night, of course, is Casual Commander night. But this Saturday, September 30th is our competitive Pauper Commander event. Players will be placed into pods for a game of Pauper Commander, and the winner of each pod will receive $20 in store credit. And the following week, on October 14th we’ll be hosting our Doctor Who Commander Launch Party. Players will need an unaltered Doctor Who Commander Deck. Promos will be available for all participants, and if you use play with multiple decks, you’ll get multiple promos!

This week’s featured single card is a foil copy of The Chain Veil (shown above) from Magic 2015. Though the card sees play in the sideboard of a single Pioneer deck, Mono-Green devotion, The Chain Veil is typically a Commander card. More specifically, The Chain Veil is a super-friends card. The artifact punishes you if you don’t activate a Planeswalker each turn, but also allows you to pay 4 mana and tap it to activate Planeswalker abilities an additional time. Planeswalkers are already some of the most powerful cards in Magic, and this artifact makes them even more so. This particular copy is an original foil printing, and as mentioned in this space before, that is close to a new Reserved List as you can find. That means this copy is especially collectible. You can find it, and our other singles, at https://labyrinthgameshop.tcgplayerpro.com/.

That’s all for this week. See you next Magic Monday!
